Managing Prostate Problems The Natural Way

Prostate problems usually affect elderly men. Although not limited to the elderly, issues with the prostate tend to increase in incidence with age, with men in their 70s and 80s much more vulnerable than their younger counterparts.

Located between the bladder and the penis, the prostate gland is a walnut-sized gland that secretes fluid that nourishes and protects the sperm. The urethra is the tube through which urine flows freely out of the penis. Due to the fact that this tube runs through the centre of the prostate, enlargement of the prostate squeezes the urethra and obstructs urine flow.

There are three main causes of prostate enlargement in men: prostatitis which is inflammation usually due to infection, benign prostatic hyperplasia which affects virtually all men over the age of 50, or cancerous growth.

Treatment of prostate problems largely depends on the cause. For example, in prostatis, the mainstay of treatment is usually antibiotics. In the case of BPH or enlarged prostate, there are conventional drug treatments such as Alpha blockers and 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors that shrink the prostate and improve urine flow. In the case of cancerous growth, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgical removal may be employed.

Prostate problems usually present with symptoms such as poor urine flow, frequent urination, painful urination, and poor bladder control. If ignored, these symptoms can really degenerate and adversely affect quality of life in latter years.

Our experts at Nature’s Lab® have compiled their list of nature’s most effective remedies for treating and managing prostate problems:

1. Saw Palmetto – Several studies have shown the extract of the fruit of saw palmetto to be highly effective in managing symptoms of prostate enlargement. It works by shrinking the inner lining of the prostate that puts pressure on the urethra tube carrying urine. Saw palmetto is best consumed in supplement form.

2. Tomatoes – Rich in the powerful antioxidant called lycopene, tomatoes are a good natural remedy for prostate problems. Some studies show that people who eat diets high in tomatoes and other fruits high in lycopene have lower cancer rates, and some researchers even believe lycopene may retard the growth of prostate tumors. Tomatoes can be consumed raw, cooked or in supplement form.

3. Pumpkin Seeds – Pumpkin seeds are a natural source of Zinc and Linoleic Acid . Several studies have shown pumpkin seeds to be important in helping to decongest the prostate gland and improve urine flow. Pumpkin seeds can be consumed raw, processed or in supplement form.

4.  Pear / African Plum Tree Bark Extract – This is what we fondly refer to as pear in Nigeria. The delicious healthy fruit we like to eat as a compliment to corn cobs is packed full of natural chemicals that help shrink the prostate in order to treat symptoms such as poor urinary flow and frequent night time urination. Research has consistently shown the bark of the pear tree to be an effective natural remedy for men with prostate problems.

5. Herbal blends – There are a variety of proprietary herbal blends available for treating prostate problems. Nature’s Lab experts recommend a great product called Himplasia, which is an ayurvedic blend of 6 natural herbs: Tribulus Terresteris, Bonduc Nut, Areca Nut Palm, Asparagus, Three leaved Caper & Processed Agate. You can purchase this product from our online shop.

Other health tips we can recommend include: consuming a healthy intake of flaxseed oil daily, boiling corn husks for 30 minutes and drinking the water, drinking green cabbage soup, urinating in a sitting position to help empty the bladder better, drinking fenugreek powder, and squeezing your buttock muscles at intervals throughout the day.
